A distribution box is a low-voltage power distribution unit in which switchgear, measuring instruments, protective devices, and other components are assembled within an enclosed or semi-enclosed metal cabinet, in accordance with electrical wiring requirements. It protects circuits against overloads, short circuits, and earth leakage, and is characterized by its compact size, ease of installation, and stable operation.
Electrical safety is fundamental to a secure home; as the central control hub for the household electrical system, the proper installation of the distribution box is directly linked to safety. If you are unsure how to install one, please read on.
Step 1
Preparation—gathering the necessary tools and confirming key details—is crucial for a smooth installation.
- Gather the required tools: an impact drill, screwdriver, wire strippers, voltage tester, and electrical tape, along with appropriately rated circuit breakers and earth leakage protection devices (ELPDs).
- Confirm the suitable distribution box model; select a unit with a rated current capacity that matches the home’s total power load.
- Before starting work, be sure to turn off the main power supply entering the home and use a voltage tester to verify that the circuits are de-energized.
Step 2
Mark the mounting points based on the planned location. Use an impact drill to create holes at these marks and insert expansion bolts. Secure the distribution box housing firmly and levelly against the wall; using a spirit level ensures the box is not tilted, which prevents the switches from sticking or jamming during future operation.
Step 3
Organize the incoming mains cable and the outgoing circuit wires, distinguishing between the live wire (red/brown), neutral wire (blue/black), and earth wire (yellow-green). Arrange the components in the following order: main switch → earth leakage protection device → individual circuit breakers. The main switch controls the incoming power; the earth leakage protection device serves the socket circuits; and individual circuit breakers control separate circuits such as lighting, air conditioning, and the kitchen.
Strip approximately 1 cm of insulation from the ends of the wires and connect them to the corresponding terminals, tightening the screws securely. Connect neutral wires to the neutral busbar and earth wires to the earth busbar; connect live wires to the input terminals of the respective switches. Once all connections are made, tidy up the wiring and secure it neatly with cable ties to prevent wires from crossing or being crushed against one another.
Step 4
First, disconnect all branch circuit breakers, then switch on the main breaker. Turn on the branch breakers one by one and check that the lights and sockets on the corresponding circuits are receiving power correctly. Press the test button on the residual current device (RCD) to confirm it trips and cuts off power as intended, ensuring the leakage protection function is operational. Finally, apply labels to the circuits indicating the area controlled by each switch to facilitate future troubleshooting.
A final reminder: unless you have professional electrical expertise, it is not recommended to install the distribution box yourself, as wiring errors could create safety hazards.
